If you want to learn more about data engineering but haven’t got the time to complete a full degree, then the Undergraduate Certificate in Data Engineering is the perfect course for you.

This short course is designed for people working in IT roles and want to develop the skills to cultivate business intelligence from large data sets or to share information gathered from data, to develop new business strategies.

The Undergraduate Certificate in Data Engineering requires the completion of four subjects covering introductory programming, introductory data analysis, introduction to databases and machine learning.

All students must complete the following four subjects:
▪ Introduction to Databases
▪ Introduction to Data Analysis
▪ Introduction to Programming
▪ Machine Learning


The Undergraduate Certificate in Data Engineering requires you to complete four subjects and a total of 40 credit points. More information is available at: tafensw.edu.au/degrees


If you have completed studies at this level in a related field, or if you have extensive and current industry or workplace experience, you may be eligible for exemption from some subjects. All applications for exemption must be made to the course coordinator and must include supporting documentation. You should attend classes until you are formally advised that your exemption has been granted.


Students who complete the Undergraduate Certificate in Data Engineering and choose to continue their studies in the Bachelor of Information Technology (Data Engineering), will receive credit for the four completed subjects.


To be eligible for admission into the Undergraduate Certificate in Data Engineering, you must have completed:

▪ NSW HSC or equivalent, OR
▪ Tertiary Preparation Certificate, OR
▪ a Certificate IV qualification or higher.

You can apply under special admission provisions (including mature age and disadvantage) if you do not meet the above entry requirements. You will be required to submit documentation to support your application for special admission.



Full-time students enrol in 4 subjects worth 40 credit points for one semester.

Students will study online via a blended delivery model. This means that some content will be delivered via face to face classes while other content will be delivered online. Generally each subject will require 4 hours of teacher directed learning. It is recommended that students also undertake an additional 4 hours per week of private study per subject to maximise their understanding of course content.


A range of assessment methods are used across subjects in this course with most subjects requiring the completion of 3 to 4 assessment tasks, with assessments designed to be practical and relevant to data engineering contexts.
